The World Loses a Great Journalist who Was a Social Justice Warrior – Frand Deford
Like anyone who kn
ew him, read him, watched him or listened to him, I feel a great sense of loss with the passing of Frank Deford. He was one of the media’s biggest social consciences and always spoke the truth about what was right and wrong about sport in America and around the world.
I was lucky enough to know Frank since the 1970s. Frank and Jeanne Ashe, Arthur’s widow, presented me the Arthur Ashe Voice of Conscience Award almost 20 years ago to the day on June 2, 1997.
He interviewed me for his NPR commentaries and I tried to tune in for all of them because they were always insightful and informative.
We appeared together at various events including the World Youth Peace Summit along with then Secretary of State Hilary Clinton and Colin Powell. His world was the world and not just sports.
The National Consortium for Academics in Sport inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 2014. We are proud to have him as a Hall of Famer along with Nelson Mandela, Muhammad Ali, John Carlos and Tommie Smith. Nancy Lieberman and Robin Roberts will be this year’s inductees.
Frank Deford was a social justice warrior who used stories about sport to tell us about life. We will miss him tremendously. He made the world a better place.

Hello! I know this is kinda off topic but I was wondering which blog platform are you using for
this site? I’m getting tired of WordPress because I’ve had issues with hackers and I’m looking at alternatives for
another platform. I would be awesome if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.
Stunning story there. What occurred after? Thanks!
